A Little bit of Haven

A week before school finished we decided we wanted a last minute  family holiday but didn’t want to travel too far. After coming up with a few ideas we decided to book a caravan at a Haven site at Lakeland Flookburgh South Cumbria, not even leaving the county!
We set off into the unknown as we have never stayed on a caravan site or with Haven. As we arrived we were impressed by the large site and with only a glimpse at the very start of the park we realised this was going to be a fun family holiday.

We went into the reception to check in and were greeted by a very enthusiastic lady who quickly took us through the park information covering a large amount of detail in an upbeat manner and gave each of our children a blue balloon with Haven written on and gave us an information pack with details all about the park including a map.

As we left the reception we noticed a shop which we later found out was relatively new and sells everything and more from a variety of food to swimming costumes and toys. They also sell the Haven characters of Rory the Tiger, Anxious the Elephant and all the rest of the Seaside Squad.

As we drove to out caravan (each area of the park has a different name which relate to somewhere in the Lake District we stayed in Grizedale) we were impressed by their size from the outside but as we opened the door we truly hadn’t expected the spacious caravan that would be our home for the next 3 nights. We were greeted by an immaculate open plan kitchen-diner, living room with tv, DVD player, fire and a huge L shaped corner sofa. The kitchen even had a large fridge and freezer, hob and oven. In the cupboards there were even cutlery and cups, plates and dishes basically a home from home.

As we looked around the rest of the space we continued to be surprised. The bathroom has a shower, the child room although small has space for 2 beds and has lots of cupboard space for all those cherished toys that have come along for an adventure.

The main bedroom had 2 double wardrobes, dressing table with mirror (in the drawer you will find a hairdryer), a double bed and something we didn’t realise until the following morning an ensuite toilet in an unassuming door which I had thought was just a cupboard! Those like us with a travel cot there was plenty of room to put the cot at the bottom of our bed so those with young children it is perfect (in the past we’ve stayed in hotels and have had to move beds, furniture etc to fit a cot in)!

There are so many activities we managed to try swimming (indoor pool however there is an outdoor pool too) and the go karts. Other activities include;

  • Aerial adventure
  • Bowling green
  • Archery
  • Peddle boats
  • Golf
  • Tennis
  • Bingo

There also many other activities that you can book such as learning kayaking in the pool and ranger trail some of these you need to pay for and each activity has a stated age such as suitable for all or specified ages.

We chose to use the site as a base and go out for little day trips but you could easily stay on-site and have a really fun time.

Each evening there are shows suitable for families the Seaside Squad show was a favourite and we watched this each evening.

There is an onsite arcade with 2p machines being a favourite (it is a family friendly arcade) and if you don’t want to cook there’s a restaurant and even a fish and chip shop (the chips are delicious btw)!

Now back at home as a family we have each looked at what our favourite bits of the holiday have been. For Boo she just liked being somewhere different and enjoyed it all. Monkey said his favourite part was when we first arrived and he saw the caravan for the first time. For my husband and I we both loved the go karts listening to the children squealing with excitement going over the bumps and also being able to explore parts of South Cumbria with the knowledge we didn’t need to rush off for a 2 hour plus trip home normally arriving back home very late all exhausted and weary for the next day.

So having never been on a caravan site before would we go again? Definitely. In fact the first day there we were even looking online to see whether we could find another date to book again which we’ve never thought of doing previously whilst still on holiday.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves far more than we expected, it was our best last minute idea we’ve had and one we will repeat again.
